REDWOOD CITY, Calif., June 27, 2016  Course Hero, the online learning platform empowering millions of students and educators to succeed, was named today as a 2016 Top Workplace by the Bay Area News Group. This honor is based on a rigorous assessment of Course Hero’s workplace culture including a survey of the company’s employees.

“At Course Hero we strive to not only create heroes in education, but to also connect with and support heroes within our own workplace. It is with great pride that we accept this award as a 2016 Top Workplace in the Bay Area,” said Course Hero Cofounder and CEO Andrew Grauer. “We look forward to growing our all-star team and continuing this positive culture as we continue to democratize education.”

Course Hero is an online learning platform where students and teachers can share and access course-specific study resources anytime, anywhere. The platform also provides expert tutors and course advice from other students on-demand around the clock.

Course Hero’s employees include teachers and marketing professionals from top universities, as well as engineers, web designers, and product managers from tech giants like Amazon and Google. Some employees have taught at Teach for America and others at some of the world’s top universities.

The company prides itself in its workplace flexibility and freedom and in the healthy work-life balance it encourages in its employees.

Course Hero believes that a culture of sharing and collaboration is essential to help students succeed and it embraces this same philosophy throughout its company culture. The company organizes its people in small, tightly knit product groups that work very closely and have a significant amount of autonomy in the direction of the products they work on.

Strategic planning or “roadmaps” as they are called are decided in a bottoms-up and top-down approach and each team’s roadmap is completely visible across the entire organization. The result is a fast-moving, collaborative, and open-company culture where accountability is embraced and rejoiced across every team in every department.

“The Top Workplaces award is not a popularity contest. Often times, people assume it’s all about fancy perks and benefits.” says Doug Claffey, CEO of WorkplaceDynamics. “But to be a Top Workplace, organizations must meet our strict standards for organizational health. And who better to ask about work life than the people who live the culture every day—the employees. Time and time again, our research has proven that what’s most important to them is a strong belief in where the organization is headed, how it’s going to get there, and the feeling that everyone is in it together.” Claffey adds, “Without this sense of connection, an organization doesn’t have a shot at being named a Top Workplace.”
