All-New National Student Day Contest Opens Today


OBERLIN, OHIO, September 24, 2015 – Celebrating and rewarding college students for their hard work and supporting children’s literacy are at the heart of the all-new National Student Day photo-sharing contest, which runs Sept. 24-Oct. 22. Calling All College Football Fans: Samsung Milk Music Now Live Streaming Home and Away Feeds of NCAA Football Games


No matter what the weekend’s plans, fans will have access to their local college sports broadcast.

There’s a new way to listen to the big game: Samsung Milk Music’s newly-launched Sports genre brings the excitement from the field right to the app’s dial. The app’s sports live streams now include the ability to select either “home” or “away” game audio feeds, so devoted fans can access the announcers of their choice, whether their team is playing on home turf or on the road.

During the 2015 NCAA football season, Samsung Milk Music will live stream the home and away team’s local broadcasts, when available, of 900 college football games and conference championships from 122 college teams. When the NCAA basketball season tips off in November, Samsung Milk Music will live stream more than 3,000 men’s college basketball games from 137 teams. Samsung Milk Music is the only service to pair a high volume of schools and content with a full feature set for sports listeners.

Live streams of the local home and away team audio feeds are now available on the Samsung Milk Music dial. Live stream information for each game will appear on the dial once the pre-show has begun, until the post-show has been completed.

• The “Sports Guide”, located via the app’s main menu, is updated daily, listing all of the day’s available games and final game score listings.

Golden Door Scholars Expands Reach of College Scholarship Program for High-Performing Undocumented Students


Nonprofit organization to partner with distinguished universities to award
up to 50 full-ride scholarships for 2016-17 academic year

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (September 23, 2015) – Golden Door Scholars (GDS), a 501c3 organization that creates economic mobility for high performing, highly motivated undocumented students, today announced plans to expand the program exponentially, awarding up to 50 scholarships for the 2016-17 academic year. Previously, GDS focused on students from North and South Carolina, but will now accept applications from all 27 states that still have tuition inequity.

“We’ve been incredibly impressed by our 45 scholars, who are currently excelling at some of the nation’s top universities,” said Ric Elias, Golden Doors Scholars Founder and CEO of Red Ventures. “Their success has emboldened us to double down on our efforts and help even more of the exceptionally talented young people being left behind by existing policies and bureaucracy. This isn’t a political issue; it’s a human rights issue.”

Founded in 2012, GDS provides scholarships, mentorship and professional development to high performing undocumented students known as Dreamers, who came to the United States with their parents as young children and are legally protected by the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. The majority of these students and their families live in states where they aren’t afforded in-state tuition rates for post-secondary education, making college out of reach financially.

“There’s a common misconception that a large number of private scholarships are available to undocumented students, which make up for a lack of federal aid and in-state tuition,” said Debra J. Chermonte, Vice President and Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid at Oberlin College. “The reality is that very few scholarships of any kind are open to undocumented students, and only a handful help Dreamers. We are proud to partner with Golden Door Scholars in the fight for equal access to higher education for all students.”

Nationally recognized institutions such as Davidson College and Wake Forest University currently partner with the Golden Door Scholars team, and Oberlin College has already signed on as partner for the upcoming academic year.

“With more than a half a million unfilled, high-paying technology jobs available in the United States today, educating students to help meet that demand helps position them well for continued success,” said Kacey Grantham, Executive Director of Golden Door Scholars. “With that in mind, we’re placing added emphasis on identifying scholars with an interest in technology-related fields.”

Half of College-Aged Adults Not Opposed to Open Relationships, Avvo Study Finds


Renowned Relationship Expert and Sexologist Dr. Pepper Schwartz Weighs in on Evolving Generational Romantic Attitudes

SEATTLE, Sept. 17, 2015 – A 2015 Avvo, Inc. study of relationship trends across the United States finds that half of college-aged Americans are not opposed to being in an open relationship, which is defined as a relationship in which both parties consent to sleeping with others. Only 49% of Americans aged 18-23 and 43% of those aged 24-32 saying they are morally opposed to the idea of open relationships, as compared to 56% of people over age 33.

Noted sociologist and sexologist Dr. Pepper Schwartz from the University of Washington attributes this acceptance of open relationships to experimentation that is common in this age group. “When we’re young and out in the world on our own for the first time, we’re more apt to experiment with our romantic relationships and be open to new experiences when it comes to love and sex,” Schwartz said. “As this generation ages, it will be interesting to see if their views will evolve to accept open relationships less, or if they will continue to accept the idea of open relationships as they marry.”

A desire for marriage may kick in shortly after graduation but then wane again once individuals become entrenched in their mid-thirties. In fact, when it comes to seeing marriage as a life goal, college-aged Americans may be more like their parents than those only a few years older than them. Specifically, a quarter (25%) of Americans 24-32 say marriage should be a life goal, whereas 20% of 18-23 year-olds 17% of those over age 33 feel the same. College-aged individuals are also more like their parents when it comes to attitudes around the relevance of marriage as an institution: 12% of 18-23 year-olds and 8% of those 33 and over believe that marriage is an outdated institution; compare this with 19% of those 24-32 who believe the same.

“Young adulthood carries a unique set of expectations around the future,” Schwartz said. “Social norms have shifted over the past few decades such that the institution of marriage isn’t as sacrosanct as it used to be. But the idea of pairing up in a long-term relationship and having children is still a part of being a grown-up. ”

College-aged individuals differ from their parents when it comes to associating children with marriage. Only 15% of Americans 18-23 believe that an unwed couple who has a child together should get married. In contrast, 24% of those 24-32 and 22% of those 33 and over believe the same.

All age groups appear to have similar views when it comes to divorce where romance, or a “spark,” fading is an issue: approximately three-quarters of all age groups disagree that married couples who no longer want to be in a romantic relationship – or who’ve lost that “lovin’ feeling” with their spouse – should definitely get a divorce.

“With divorce rates trending upward overall over the past 50 years, and with many of these young adults growing up in homes where divorced parents and remarriage were the norm, it comes as no surprise that there is a significant number of people who believe that divorce is a reasonable and validated choice when romance fades,” Schwartz said. “The percent of young people who are less invested in marriage as an institution shows a generational vision of marital fragility and perceived limits to the idea of life-time marriage.”

Calling All Makers, DIYers, and Innovators: IEEE’s Do-It-Yourself Competition Starts Today


$500 Grand Prize to be awarded to the Best Project

NEW YORK – September 17, 2015 – Students and tech enthusiasts looking to showcase their technological prowess and become one of the next up and coming engineers, have the opportunity to gain worldwide recognition by entering their inventions in the IEEE DIY Project contest starting today.

The IEEE DIY Project was created to help encourage and support future makers by allowing them to showcase new and innovative projects to the IEEE social media community. Last year’s competition generated over 300 unique projects on the IEEE DIY Project website from around the world with the grand prize awarded to Gaurav Gautam for his Wirelessly Operated Hand Glove Robot.

This year’s IEEE DIY Project will be hosted online from September 16, 2015 to December 7, 2015, and is open to individuals 18 years or older. Participants will share their original DIY projects online and visitors to the site can vote for their favorite submissions.

We-Consent™ — the mobile app suite to deal with Affirmative Consent

Triggers Discussions re “Only Yes Means Yes”

As the school year begins, we urge you to remember the We-Consent™ suite of mobile apps.

Given all the attention which sexual assault cases (both real and unfounded) have attracted this past school year, has created a set of mobile apps to address the problem. See Black Sports Online called this “a brilliant piece of technology.”

We realize that no app can prevent all sexual assaults, however, our apps can help with the vast majority of cases where what has occurred is a lack of explicit discussion — leading to misunderstandings, confusion, and sometimes, unfortunately, accusations. It is critical to remember that 85% of unwanted sexual encounters are NOT reported. Changing the context in which these unwanted encounters occur is our primary goal.

Our “yes” app, called WE-CONSENT™, is designed to promote the explicit discussions which the new standard of “only yes means yes” demands and, if both partners agree to create it, a secure video record of their joint affirmative consent. That record is private, encrypted, and available ONLY to law enforcement, a college or university disciplinary proceeding, or upon our receipt of a subpoena. It is NOT available to the users and cannot be circulated on the internet nor elsewhere.

Because everyone has a right to change their mind, we also created two “no” apps for that express purpose (the What-About-No™ app and the soon to be released Changed-Mind™ app). In addition, should coercion be threatened or applied, the We-Consent™ app does record an answer of “forced … yes” — which creates a permanent record of that coercion (and should deter the coercer from proceeding). [We recommend that schools which adopt the We-Consent™ app make this “forced .. yes” ability widely known as a deterrent measure.]

We will shortly be releasing the I’ve-Been-Violated™ app – which gives victims of an unwanted encounter the ability to make a video recording of what occurred. That recording, to be made once they are in a safe place, can function as “contemporaneous evidence” whenever the victim does decide to speak with appropriate authorities.

These apps, as a suite, give students constant access to both discussion triggers (i.e. “should we use the We-Consent™ App?”) and the tools they need to make affirmative consent work.

WE-CONSENT™ is only available to members of the Affirmative Consent Division of and all sign-ups occur through the web site. We are making these memberships available at a group price of $100 for 25 students (i.e. $4 each) and individually ($5). Additional discounts are available for schools offering campus wide access.
