6 ‘Friendsgiving’ tips that won’t leave you stuffed

If your family is far away, going home for the holidays isn’t always possible around Thanksgiving. Hectic finals schedules and the high cost and hassle of traveling can make it difficult for everyone you love to be in the same place at the same time.

But you can still celebrate Thanksgiving at school. Host or attend a Friendsgiving celebration, otherwise known as Thanksgiving spent with friends, as a way to still enjoy the holiday fun and food.

This leaves only one more dilemma…how do you enjoy Friendsgiving without packing on the holiday pounds? Cristina Rivera, registered dietitian, board certified sports nutritionist and consultant for The Coca-Cola Company, has six tips to help you do just that:

1. Balance your plate

A balanced plate allows you to enjoy all your holiday favorites while also loading up on important nutrients. To ensure your plate is balanced, fill half of it with veggies that are high in fiber. This can help prevent overeating because the veggies make you feel full. Then fill 1/4 of your plate with turkey or other protein and the remaining 1/4 with starches (potatoes, stuffing). Before going back for seconds, make sure the veggies are finished and refill the plate the same way.

2. Have everything you love … in moderation

There is nothing worse than feeling deprived because you passed up your favorite holiday treats in an attempt to avoid weight gain. The holidays are a time to celebrate and enjoy the foods you typically only have once a year, without feeling guilty or attaching labels to them. Labeling them as “forbidden” ahead of time will only backfire and can lead to overeating. Give yourself permission to enjoy the foods and beverages you love and look forward to every year. Have enough to satisfy you then move on to the next one.

3. Serve smaller bites and sips

Holiday treats can be served in mini sizes to give you and guests the perfect flavor with fewer calories. Serving food on smaller plastic plates and bowls allows for automatic portion control. Beverages can also be served in smaller sizes for all of the great taste with fewer calories. For instance, the Coca-Cola mini can is 7.5-oz. and comes in a variety of flavors including Diet Coke and Coke Zero. Not only will you be on trend with the mini servings, but your guests will be able to enjoy a little bit of everything.

4. Celebrate with leftovers

Hosting Friendsgiving can seem tough when on a budget or living in a dorm room (you can’t exactly make turkey on a hot pot). However, dining halls tend to do a Thanksgiving themed dinner a few days before the holiday, so why not take some to go? Gather up all of your Tupperware and fill it with leftovers. You and your friends can have a traditional Thanksgiving dinner without breaking the bank or needing a pot or pan!

5. Slow down

Take time in between bites to enjoy your friends’ company. Research shows it takes up to 15 minutes for our brain to register we’re full. Rather than gobbling down everything on your plate in 10 minutes or less, put down the fork from time to time and join the conversation. The extra time you take to eat your meal gives your brain time to catch up to your belly, and will prevent overeating.

6. Get moving

Gather your besties and see if your sports center is hosting a pre- or post-Thanksgiving workout. Friendsgiving is not only a day to enjoy great food and beverages but there are also tons of holiday-themed activities to keep you active. Balancing the calories consumed from foods and beverages with calories expended through exercise, is a surefire way to keep the holiday pounds from creeping up. Look up what activities your college town offers that weekend and choose one to be a new Friendsgiving tradition.

LINE Webtoon Launches Challenge League, a New Discovery Feature for Webcomic Creators and Aspiring Artists

$50,000 Comic Contest Debuts New System for Webcomic Artists to Become Published and Reach New Audiences

November 20, 2014 – LOS ANGELES – LINE Webtoon, the popular webcomic service available on smartphones, tablets and web browsers, has officially launched Challenge League, a new feature that allows for artists to submit their webcomics for a chance to become an official LINE Webtoon artist. Challenge League is free for webcomic fans and aspiring artists looking to showcase their talents and gain recognition, while discovering the best comic content available via mobile and desktop.

To officially launch Challenge League, LINE Webtoon will host a $50,000 competition globally, to discover the best new webtoon artists. Anyone over the age of fourteen can participate in the competition by uploading a webcomic in English at www.webtoons.com/challenge. To be eligible to win the prizes, the content will be judged based on audience engagement, such as number of views and shares. Additionally, LINE Webtoon’s staff will evaluate the content based on creativity, originality and the artist’s ability to publish webcomics on a weekly basis. The prizes include two $5,000 third place prizes, a $10,000 second place prize and a $30,000 grand prize. The contest is free to enter and will run until January 25, 2015. The winner will be announced on January 30, 2015. LINE Webtoon will continue providing the Challenge League service on its official site after the contest.

“We have spent over ten years discovering and showcasing some of the best webtoon artists and content to our fans, and now we’re giving them the chance to become official LINE Webtoon webtoonists through Challenge League,” said JunKoo Kim, Director and Head of the LINE Webtoon Division. “Based on Challenge League’s popularity in Korea, where 73.4 percent of LINE Webtoon artists are discovered through Challenge League, we are excited to launch the competition globally and discover the next generation of webcomic artists.”

In sharing their creations, Challenge League artists can meet their audience and communicate with them through the simple and easy to use interface. This ecosystem was created to help creators gain popularity and become official webtoonists within the LINE Webtoon service. LINE Webtoon also offers opportunities to recreate the webcomic across diverse media such as movies, TV series and more to expand beyond just webcomics. LINE Webtoon is dedicated to helping artists launch a full time career, with some Webtoon artists earning up to $80,000 a month.

In addition to the contest, LINE Webtoon will be working with universities and centers of higher education to reward student artists that participate in the Challenge League competition. If a student wins the $30,000 grand prize, LINE Webtoon will also make a matching $30,000 donation to the student’s university or place of education. If the grand prize winner is a student, they will also be offered a contract to produce webcomics for LINE Webtoon officially.

LINE Webtoon, launched in the U.S. and globally on July 2, 2014, currently offers approximately 53 webcomics, including multiple globally heralded series among the 520 original NAVER webtoons. Popular titles include “Noblesse”, “Tower of God”, “The God of High School” and more. LINE Webtoon users can enjoy multiple genres of webcomics, easy access to download content on-the-go and can receive update notifications when newly-released webtoons are available. Featuring advanced social sharing and comment functions, LINE Webtoon also includes a rating system to drive more exposure for popular artists.

Fans can access Challenge League by visiting http://www.webtoons.com. To download LINE Webtoon, visit the Apple App Store (https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/line-webtoon/id894546091?mt=8) and Google Play (http://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.naver.linewebtoon). Martinez’s compelling “Dollhouse” companion video has proven an online phenomenon, with individual page views now in excess of 11 million at www.youtube.com/watch?v=HcVv9R1ZR84. Co-written by Martinez with GRAMMY® Award-nominated tunesmiths Kinetics & One Love (B.o.B, Neon Hitch), the dark pop dream of “Dollhouse” has already earned an array of ecstatic critical notices. The song “positions Martinez as an American version of Lorde,” writes Newsday’s Glenn Gamboa. “She’s an 18-year-old writing songs for and about teenagers in an authentic, memorable way.” “(Martinez) sings about a picture-perfect family that is much more troubled under the surface,” declared Us Weekly, noting that Martinez – a former contestant on NBC’s smash reality singing competition series, The Voice – “might be the show’s first real breakout star.”

“Carousel,” taken from Martinez’s breakthrough debut, “THE DOLLHOUSE EP,” is currently featured in the first extended trailer for FX Networks’ American Horror Story: Freak Show (www.youtube.com/watch?v=qKGwySm9nMc). The official companion video – filmed on the acclaimed singer/songwriter’s native Long Island, New York, premiered a few weeks ago via Buzzfeed and can be viewed here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zAB5AC9yhY0. Yahoo called the video “a wild ride” adding that “the video has everything: zombie carnies, freaky funhouse mirrors, scary dolls, levitation, light bondage, purple eyebrows, pink vomit… and Melanie’s haunting voice, of course, accompanied by the eerie tinkling of music boxes and the oom-pah-pah of old-school organ grinders.”

Martinez is currently hard at work finishing her eagerly awaited debut album ‘Cry Baby’ alongside the aforementioned Kinetics & One Love. ‘Cry Baby’ is slated to arrive in spring 2015.

The release will also include the never-before-heard 2012 demo, “Tell Me It’s Okay,” two bonus tracks “Escape Route” and “Native Tongue”, and 8 electrifying live tracks recorded this past summer at Denver’s world famous Red Rocks Amphitheater as the GRAMMY® AWARD-nominated band co-headlined the hugely successful “Monumentour” (see attached tracklisting).

Paramore’s first all-new release in more than three years, “PARAMORE” showcased a string of smash singles, including two top 40, RIAA platinum certified hits, “Still Into You” and “Ain’t It Fun.” The latter track proved one of Paramore’s biggest singles to date, ascending to #2 at Top 40 outlets nationwide as well as to the top 10 on Billboard’s “Hot 100” – the band’s first ever top 10 hit and their highest peaking song thus far on both charts.

Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority, Inc. Declared Winner of Voto Latino’s RepUrLetters Challenge

Latino Greeks join Voto Latino in registering more than 1500 voters in 2014

WASHINGTON, D.C. – November 7, 2014 – In preparation for the 2014 midterm elections, Voto Latino partnered with national Latino Greek organizations for the second-ever RepUrLetters Challenge (RepUrLetters), a competition for Latino Greeks across the country to register voters on their campuses and in their communities.

RepUrLetters seeks to fuse the energy of Voto Latino’s online voter registration tools and social media and celebrity networks with the Latino Greeks’ expansive student and alumni network. Voter registration efforts were coordinated both on the ground and online since the spring of 2014. Through the combined efforts of over 16 Latino Greek organizations, in 2014, RepUrLetters registered voters in at least 31 states and across 750 college campuses.

The winner of this year’s RepUrLetters Challenge is Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority, Inc, the largest historically Latina national sorority in the United States. Sigma Lambda Gamma’s voter registration efforts accounted for 36% of the total number of voters registered through the RepUrLetters Challenge, with the highest number of voters registered.

“On behalf of Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority, Inc., we are honored to actively empower the Latino community to vote during 2014 midterm elections,” said Genevieve Padro, Director of Engagement for Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority, Inc. “Sigma Lambda Gamma named as the 2014 winners of the RepUrLetters Challenge is only the beginning of our dedication to servicing our communities for positive change; our vote is our voice!”

“I would like to personally congratulate the sisters of Sigma Lambda Gamma for their efforts to register voters this year,” said Voto Latino President and CEO, María Teresa Kumar. “The number of voters registered was certainly impressive, but even more impressive is the capacity the women of Sigma Lambda Gamma have shown to be leaders in their communities. We are honored and proud to have worked with them and with fifteen other national Latino Greek organizations to help even more Latinos magnify the power of our vote in the 2014 elections.”

The Top 5 Apps for Traveling College Students this Holiday Season

How to Save Time, Money and a Pounding Headache Using only Your Smartphone

NORCROSS, Ga. (November 4, 2014) – As many of your fellow classmates will happily tell you, the official start to the holiday season is just a few weeks away. If you plan to skip town and head home for the holidays or hit the slopes for a much needed vacation, you need to start making travel plans now. In order to save time, money and a pounding headache this holiday season, look no further than your smartphone. Here are the top five must have holiday travel apps for college students:

  • RoadNinja – If your holiday travel plans include loading up your car full of friends, RoadNinja is the perfect app for you. Users learn the locations of restaurants, gas stations and points of interest near every highway exit. View real-time gas prices and access RoadNinja special offers and coupons. Share places you do or don’t like on social media with the tap of a finger.
  • Popmoney – Because let’s face it, your friends don’t carry cash. Figuring out who among friends owes what for gas, hotel rooms, dinners, groceries and other payments during holiday travel can be a nightmare. Popmoney allows users to pay each other back using the recipient’s email address or mobile phone number.
  • GateGuru – In case you already forgot last year’s brutal winter, it saw more than a million weather related flight cancellations according to research by The Weather Channel. For any student traveling on a plane this holiday season, GateGuru helps you find the best place to grab a bite and even do a little holiday shopping while at the airport. Suddenly that long delay becomes less painful and maybe even productive.
  • Inrix Traffic – Research from the Travel Channel shows the day before Thanksgiving is the busiest travel day of the year, closely followed by the Sunday after the delicious day. Because there are few things worse than wasting your holiday vacation while stuck in traffic, the Inrix Traffic app is a must have this holiday season. Using the app’s user-friendly interface, you have up-to-the-minute access to new routes, traffic patterns and gas prices.
  • Spotify – To make sure everyone in your carpool home for the holidays can sing along, this is the perfect app for road trip music. With millions of artists at the user’s fingertips, playlists can be created so that everyone’s tastes are accounted for. Create a holiday mix to get you in the spirit of the season, or play some heavy metal to cope with the traffic.

When dealing with busy roads, unpredictable weather and inflated prices, preparation is key to having a smooth holiday travel experience. Don’t forget to download the above mentioned apps for your best holiday trip yet. Happy traveling!
