Morning Consult survey shows strong public support for addressing smoking and tobacco use among college students

ATLANTA, GA (November 14, 2016) – The American Cancer Society and the CVS Health Foundation today awarded grants to 20 U.S. colleges and universities as part of their Tobacco-Free Generation Campus Initiative (TFGCI), a $3.6 million multi-year program intended to accelerate and expand the adoption and implementation of 100 percent smoke- and tobacco-free campus policies. The announcement coincides this week with the American Cancer Society Great American Smokeout.

The Tobacco-Free Generation Campus Initiative is part of Be The First, CVS Health’s five-year, $50 million initiative that supports education, advocacy, tobacco control, and healthy behavior programming to help deliver the nation’s first tobacco-free generation. CVS Health has set actionable and measurable goals for Be The First, including a doubling of the number of tobacco-free college and university campuses in the United States.

“With our partners at CVS Health, we are excited to support the efforts of many dedicated students, faculty and staff to make their campuses smoke- and tobacco-free using proven strategies that will also reduce tobacco use among students,” said Gary M. Reedy, Chief Executive Officer for the American Cancer Society. “To be successful in creating a tobacco-free generation, it is important that we prevent and eliminate lethal and addictive tobacco use among college students.”

The American Cancer Society Great American Smokeout will take place on Thursday, November 17. The annual intervention effort encourages smokers to quit for a day, quit for good, or make a plan to quit, and raises awareness around the many tools and resources they can use to help them quit.

Grant Recipients from Coast to Coast
Over the next three years, the Tobacco-Free Generation Campus Initiative will award grants to a total of 125 colleges and universities throughout the U.S. with the greatest need for stronger tobacco prevention and control. The grants will help schools successfully advocate for, adopt and implement 100 percent smoke- and tobacco-free campus policies. Campuses will also receive technical assistance and resources to support their efforts with education, communications, cessation, and evaluation.

The University of Pennsylvania is one of the first 20 grant recipients, and is working towards becoming the first Ivy League institution to adopt a 100 percent tobacco-free campus policy.

“We are grateful to be among the recipients of the American Cancer Society/CVS Health Foundation tobacco control grant as it recognizes and supports Penn’s commitment to a tobacco-free campus,” said Penn President Amy Gutmann. “Under the leadership of Penn pulmonologist Frank Leone, we have developed an innovative, interdisciplinary approach to smoking cessation that has yielded unprecedented success in just two years. Frank Leone and his colleagues understand the complexity of the problem of tobacco dependence and the need to take a long-term view to change tobacco behaviors. This generous grant will greatly aid the University’s ongoing efforts to effectively address this major public health epidemic.”

Other grant recipients include: Bowling Green State University (Ohio), California State University San Marcos, Davenport University (Mich.), East Carolina University (N.C.), El Paso Community College (Texas), Indiana University – Bloomington, Lenoir-Rhyne University (N.C.), Merritt College (Calif.), Montclair State University (N.J.), Oakland University (Mich.), Penn State University (Pa.), Piedmont Community College (N.C.), Saint Mary’s College of California, Springfield College (Mass.), St. Xavier University (Ill.), Texas Christian University, Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi, University of Cincinnati Blue Ash College (Ohio) and University of Michigan.

Public Support for Tobacco Control on Campus
TFGCI grants are intended to address a critical, unmet need by supporting efforts to advocate for, establish and institute smoke- and tobacco-free campus policies. The U.S. Department of Education reports there are approximately 4,700 institutions of higher education in the United States. According to the Americans for Nonsmokers’ Rights Foundation, only 1,427 campuses are 100-percent smoke- and tobacco-free. That reflects major progress over earlier years, but much remains to be done.

According to a new national Morning Consult poll of 2,202 registered voters commissioned by CVS Health on October 12-18 2016, there is strong public support for addressing the continued impact of tobacco use on college and university campuses. Among the key poll findings:

- Seventy-six-percent of Americans think youth smoking and/or tobacco use is a problem. Similarly, 69% of Americans think college student smoking and/or tobacco use is a problem.
- More than half of Americans (56%) think the number of tobacco-free campuses is too low. This is similar among U.S. college students where the combined percentage is 54 percent.
- Three-quarters (75%) of Americans support policies that prohibit smoking and other tobacco use on college campuses.
- Fifty-two percent of Americans think whether or not a campus is tobacco-free is an important consideration when applying to, and potentially attending, a college/university, ranking behind academic quality (86%) and quality of housing (79%), but ahead of how competitive athletic teams are (38%).

“We’re at a critical moment in our nation’s efforts to end the epidemic of smoking and tobacco use, and expanding the number of tobacco-free college and university campuses is an important step in our efforts,” said Troyen A. Accepting Applications for New Grants
In partnership with the CVS Health Foundation, the American Cancer Society will begin accepting online applications for the next round of Tobacco-Free Generation Initiative (TFGCI) grants. The fall grant cycle will run through February 28, 2017 with the names of grant recipients to be announced in May 2017.

In addition to grants, colleges and universities will receive technical assistance throughout the tobacco-free policy planning and implementation process. Technical assistance will be provided through webinars, online resources and limited one-on-one consultations.

Alicia Cotsoradis, a junior biochemistry major at DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana, found out that she has won the $15,000 (USD) scholarship towards semester tuition and accommodation stipend.

With this scholarship, she will have the opportunity to gain a world-class education, make lifelong friendships, have unbeatable experiences and learn new ways of thinking – all for free. In addition, STA Travel will be sponsoring the student’s round-trip flight.

Originally from Lawrence, Kansas, Cotsoradis who plans to eventually study medicine, wrote in her application, “I chose to study abroad in order to eventually make me a better doctor. My patients will have such a large array of backgrounds, and during this semester abroad I want to work to know cultures other than my own so I can better my empathy skills and set myself up for success.”

She continued, “Specifically, I chose New Zealand because it represents a culture of imagination and an appreciation for all things beautiful. Between the incredible scenery, the love for adventure, and a culture based on long standing traditions, New Zealand holds all the elements necessary for me to explore myself and merge my science background with more hands on skills that will help me later in life.”

New PEN America Report Sets Out Principles to Defuse Campus Free Speech Controversies

NEW YORK – OCTOBER 17, 2016 – Addressing concerns that recent campus controversies may lead a rising generation to grow alienated from core American values of free speech, PEN America today released the “PEN America Principles on Campus Speech” to help guide university students, faculty, and administrators to advance inclusion and equality while safeguarding intellectual and academic freedom.

The Principles were released as part of the groundbreaking investigative report And Campus for All: Diversity, Inclusion, and Free Speech at U.S. Universities, which examines the future of free speech in American higher education. While declaring that there is no current crisis for free speech on campus, the report notes that “Free speech advocates face an urgent task to articulate how unfettered expression can be reconciled with acute demands for greater equality and inclusion, and, indeed, how such freedoms are essential to the realization of these goals.”

Coming from the American arm of the world’s leading free expression organization, the PEN America Principles on Campus Speech stand to shape the direction of these raging debates nationally, offering a way to address some of the most polarizing campus unrest in decades over issues such as sexist speech, racial epithets, controversial campus speakers, trigger warnings, and so-called “safe spaces” and “microaggressions.”

“The debates over racism, sexism, and homophobia that are rocking the national political discourse are also roiling American campuses, at times seeming to pit activists demanding diversity, fairness, and inclusion against advocates of free speech,” said Suzanne Nossel, Executive Director of PEN America. “The PEN America Principles on Campus Speech recognize that our universities are more diverse than ever before, but not everyone feels heard. The report combines extensive research and thorough analysis of all sides of recent debates as well as three case studies informed by exclusive interviews with protagonists in some of the most pitched campus battle in recent years: skirmishes over free speech and issues of race at Yale, conflict around anti-Semitism and the movement to Boycott, Divest, and Sanction Israel at UCLA, and controversies over the implications for free speech of specific provisions of Title IX, the law that bars sex discrimination at educational institutions, at Northwestern University.

Kaplan Test Prep Survey: Law Schools Show Continued Optimism, but Fragile Recovery Leads Most to Favor the Closure of Existing JD Programs and Limiting New Ones

New York, NY (October 6, 2016) – This past admissions cycle, the legal education community saw something they haven’t seen since 2009: an increase in the number of law school applications and LSAT® takers. This momentum is reflected in continued optimism that Kaplan Test Prep finds in its 2016 survey of law school admissions officers.* Of the 111 law schools from around country that participated in the annual survey, 92 percent say that they are feeling “more optimistic about the state of legal education” than they did one year ago. That optimism leads 78 percent of respondents to express confidence that their law school will see another increase in applications for the 2016-2017 application cycle — a far cry from the 46% who expressed such confidence, when Kaplan conducted its 2014 survey.

But perhaps still wary from a multi-year application slump and the continued tight job market for law school graduates, America’s law schools want to tread carefully. Nearly two-thirds of law schools (65 percent) agree that it “would be a good idea if at least a few law schools closed.” Additionally, 52 percent support a recent recommendation by the National Advisory Council on Institutional Quality and Integrity to the U.S. Department of Education, which was ultimately rejected, that the American Bar Association be stripped of its ability to accredit new law schools for a period of one year.

“Law schools are in the midst of what we might call a fragile application and financial recovery. We see cautious optimism, but by no means are they roaring back to life, so opening additional law schools could set things back by contributing to a job market saturated with too many lawyers looking for a limited number of jobs,” said Jeff Thomas, executive director of pre-law programs, Kaplan Test Prep. “The good news for pre-law students is that the data shows that the worst of the law school application crunch and job crisis is likely over, but we encourage aspiring attorneys to be thoughtful about what they want from law school and what that want to do with their degree.”

Kaplan’s survey also found that just 24 percent of law schools cut the number of seats for their 2016 class of first-year students, lower than the 35 percent who reported doing so for the 2015 class of 1Ls and and the 54 percent who did for the 2014 class.

“It is exciting to see increasing interest in attending law school,” said Robert Schwartz, assistant dean of admissions at UCLA School of Law. “With the job market for lawyers improving, it’s entirely plausible that we will continue to see another increase in applications this year. In the meantime, it remains imperative for law schools to keep innovating and keep tuition in check to help make law school a more attractive place for would be professionals.” Schwartz noted that UCLA Law froze tuition for the class of 2019.

“Law school is, and has been, an investment,” added Stephen Brown, assistant dean, Fordham University School of Law. “The happiest and most successful law students are the ones who come to school with a reasonable goal, a plan to achieve it – and passion.”

* For the 2016 survey, 111 of the 205 American Bar Association-accredited law schools were polled by telephone between August and September 2016. Included among the 111 are 12 of the top 25 law schools, as ranked by U.S. News & World Report.

New York City – Tapt is an exclusive campus app that has successfully finished 60 days of beta testing in three New York City colleges. After 9.1 million impressions, the team has decided to expand to 30 new campuses. The app allows students to create memes, videos and other content to share with their entire campus as their real profile or anonymously. Banning of all college professors was to ensure that students had a place just to themselves.

Tapt was founded in January 2016 when one day, co-founder and college senior Andrew Boryk finished his class only to notice no one was really sticking around the campus. This lack of school spirit became the foundation on which the app is built on.

The signup process requires students to use their .edu email, providing users a verified community. Students are also allowed to message anyone from campus, unless otherwise blocked. This, combined with the banning of all school personnel allows users to feel comfortable when posting to their campus feed.

Sports Network Announces College Football Schedule for October 1

WHAT: beIN SPORTS’ 2016 College Football coverage continues with Florida Atlantic University (FAU) visiting Florida International University (FIU) in a clash of South Florida rivals, live from Miami, FL on Saturday, October 1^st exclusively on beIN SPORTS and beIN SPORTS CONNECT.

Live coverage from Ocean Bank Field at FIU Stadium will be led by two-time All-American and member of the 2001 University of Miami National Championship team, Brett Romberg, play-by-play commentary will be provided by Matt Martucci, and former Dallas Cowboys cheerleader Jordan Daigle will be reporting from the sidelines.

In-studio shows will be hosted by Jeremy St. Louis who will be joined by six-time NFL Pro Bowl quarterback Donovan McNabb, former Dolphins Pro Bowl wide receiver O.J. McDuffie, and former #1 overall NFL draft pick Ki-Jana Carter.
