‘Iridescent’ and ‘Frenchie’ Lead as Current Student Favorites

Riverwoods, IL, Sept. 6, 2017 – Discover just passed the halfway point of its Discover it® Student Card design poll. Thus far, the iridescent pattern design (32%) and the Frenchie-in-sunglasses design (21%) are pulling ahead in the race. Voting closes Sept. 21 at midnight Central Time, so students should cast a vote at www.discover.com/student-card-poll.html. The winning card design will be available in early 2018.

Discover is also offering a $50 statement credit for students who apply through the link on the poll, are approved and make a purchase within the first three months.1

For many students, credit can be overwhelming, especially when getting their first credit card. A great resource for students is the Discover Credit Resource Center, which offers practical tips for managing credit, such as:

- Pick a credit card that fits your lifestyle. Not all credit cards are created equal, especially student cards. Take time to research and compare credit cards to find the one that best matches your lifestyle and spending habits.
- Understand all of the credit card terms. Read the fine print, including the information about the card’s Annual Percentage Rate (APR), fees and rewards.
- Get rewarded for building credit. With the Discover it® Chrome for Students, students receive 2% cash back at gas stations and restaurants on up to $1000 in combined purchases each quarter. So while you’re building credit history, you’ll also be earning cash back.
- Regularly check your credit score. The only way to know where your credit stands is to check it. With Discover Credit Scorecard, students, even those who aren’t Discover cardholders, can receive their FICO® Credit Score2 for free, making it easy to track your score.

About Discover Student Cards
The Discover it® for Students and Discover it® Chrome for Students Credit Cards offer students a great way to build their credit history early in their lives. These student cards come with many benefits including rewards on categories that students often spend in.

- The Discover it® for Students offers 5% cash back in categories that change each quarter, up to the quarterly maximum, when you sign up.
- The Discover it® Chrome for Students offers an automatic 2% cash back at gas stations and restaurants on up to $1,000 in combined purchases quarterly.

Both cards earn 1% cash back on all other purchases, as well as a Good Grade $20 Cashback Bonus if their grade point average is 3.0 (or equivalent) or higher each year they are enrolled in school, for the first five years from the account opening.3

PASSWORD PREREQUISITES: DASHLANE PROMOTES CYBERSECURITY FOR STUDENTS

dashlane-logo

The country is heading back to school and for college students, Cybersecurity 101 is in session. Dashlane, the leading password manager, is educating college students on the importance of protecting their digital identities and today announced a free, one-year subscription for its award-winning Premium service to all U.S.-based students and professors with a valid .edu email address. All current and incoming students can visit Dashlane.com/students to sign up and ensure that their passwords, credit cards, and identities stay safe and protected online, whether on or off campus.

Have Students Studied Passwords?

It’s not just our favorite celebrities or websites that get hacked. Students and their educational institutions are uniquely vulnerable to cyberattacks and protecting passwords is the first line of defense. Furthermore, students may be prone to risky behaviors like oversharing on social media, password reuse, or sharing passwords between friends. Dashlane recently reached out to students from leading American universities, (including Brown, Colgate, Georgetown, Harvard, The University of Southern California, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, among others) to learn more about their online habits and security, and found that:

• Freshman 50: Almost half (48%) of students contacted are aware that they have already been hacked or compromised at some point. These are some of the top university students who grew up with technology, but are still left vulnerable without the right tools and information.
o What’s more, most students said they have more than three devices, making it even more imperative that they be able to log in and gain access to accounts securely across each of them.
• Campus Crawl…ing with Passwords: A separate Harris Poll commissioned by Dashlane found that younger Americans are consistently more trusting/trusted with sharing email and streaming service passwords – 64% of millennials (aged 18-34) admit to sharing or receiving passwords (vs. 37% of those 35+).
• GPA (Good Password Actions):
o Students seem to know better than to save passwords in their browsers – only 35% of those polled said they do it most of the time.
o They also know password length matters – nearly 75% go above and beyond traditional requirements and use more than 9 characters, and a lot actually go 13+ characters.
• Senioritis: Dashlane research shows that the average American has 150 accounts – all of which require strong, unique passwords. Unfortunately, students are reusing passwords like crazy: at least 73% of respondents said they do not have unique passwords for every account.

“Our hope is that everyone uses a password manager, especially students at this time of year as they settle into school physically and digitally, since young people as a demographic have more online accounts to keep track of than ever before,” said Emmanuel Schalit, CEO of Dashlane. “We hope that this promotion not only teaches students how they can safely manage their online lives, but also help them save money to spend on necessities, like ramen and books.”

Crash-Course: Dashlane Cybersecurity 101

• Be cautious when using public Wi-Fi networks and devices. When using the computers in the library or connecting to public Wifi at a coffee shop, avoid logging in to sensitive online accounts, like an online banking account and your social media accounts.
• Look out for “phishy” activity. If you get an email, direct message, or a text message with a link or attachment from a person or service you don’t know, delete it. If you know the sender, verify that message is legitimate before clicking a link or downloading an attachment.
• Try not to overshare on social media. Be careful not to share posts that could reveal personally identifiable information like your street address, where you work, or any information commonly used as an account verification question. If you’re headed out of town for a weekend getaway or fall break, share posts about your trip after you return, rather than while you are away.
• Protect your online accounts and digital identity. Password reuse is a leading cause of account takeovers, so use unique passwords for each account . It’s tempting to use your dog’s name for every password, but it makes you very vulnerable to cyber criminals.

Gilman Scholars now have more opportunities to study in New Zealand

GIS-Logo-RGB-LG

Washington, D.C., and Wellington, New Zealand [August 15, 2017] – U.S. students seeking to study or intern in New Zealand have a new path to a world-class education. Education New Zealand (ENZ) and the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs in the U.S. Department of State have each committed $50,000 over the next two years to support the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program. That means that at least 10 additional Gilman Scholars will study abroad at New Zealand universities over the next two years. And, starting today, students can begin applying for the prestigious scholarship to fund study abroad programs in spring or early summer 2018.

The Gilman Scholarship enables students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad. Since its inception in 2001, the program has enabled over 24,000 economically disadvantaged U.S. students to study or intern abroad, benefitting Americans from diverse backgrounds and universities.

“The Gilman – Education New Zealand partnership is an affirmation of the strong cooperation between our two nations,” said Acting U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs Mark Taplin when the partnership was announced in June. “Through this partnership, U.S. students who otherwise would likely not study or intern abroad will now have a deeper understanding of the global economy and global challenges that we face together.”

With acclaimed academic programs, a high quality of life, a rich culture and amazing outdoor recreation opportunities, New Zealand is a welcoming country for students of all backgrounds. Gilman scholars gain proficiency in diverse languages and cultures, and gain skills that are critically important to their academic and career development. And, like all U.S. students studying abroad in New Zealand, they get the opportunity to explore some of the active volcanoes, geysers, black sand beaches, and impressive glaciers that can be found only in New Zealand.

“We are excited to partner on a competitive and selective scholarship program that will increase the diversity of U.S. students studying at New Zealand universities and strengthen relationships among our allies,” said Education New Zealand Chief Executive, Grant McPherson.

Gilman International Scholarship by the Numbers
- 78,000: Number of applications received since the inception of the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program in 2001.
- 22,000: Number of scholarships that have been awarded to students participating in Gilman study abroad programs and internships around the world.
- 3,000: Annual number of U.S. undergraduate students supported in this exchange program each year. Among them, almost half are the first in their families to attend college.
- 71: Percentage of Gilman Scholars in 2015-16 that would not have been able to study abroad without the scholarship.
- 26: Percentage of Gilman Scholars in 2015-16 that were science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) majors.
- 10: Number of additional Gilman scholars who will study abroad at New Zealand universities over the next two years.

How to apply
Students wishing to apply for the Gilman Scholarship must be undergraduate Pell Grant students in good standing at an accredited institution of higher education. U.S. students wishing to study abroad beginning between December 15, 2017 and April 15, 2018 must submit their online application by October 3, 2017. Students can determine eligibility, get tips for applying, and complete the online application by visiting GilmanScholarship.org.

ArtCenter College of Design Premieres Student Self Portrait Videos

artcenter_logo_detail

ArtCenter College of Design has launched a new video series featuring student self portraits, providing a glimpse into the creative journeys of five students at one of the world’s preeminent art and design colleges.

“In their process of researching colleges, most prospective students plan a campus visit, browse the website, or make an appointment with an admissions counselor,” said Kit Baron, senior vice president of Admissions and Enrollment Management for ArtCenter. “While these experiences are valuable and provide a great way to gather information, hearing directly from ArtCenter students to learn about their stories and their lives provides yet another deeper level of sharing. We’re often asked ‘What’s it really like to be an ArtCenter student?’ We hope the stories of these five talented individuals helps answer that common question and provide prospective students with a realistic glimpse into their world.”

The five ArtCenter students were asked to share their creative journeys and reveal personal details such as their early inspiration, decision to attend art school, current projects and long-term goals. All production in the field was completed by the individual students, who were commissioned to spend 12 weeks meeting once a month to workshop their projects, from proposal through final cut, while undertaking the challenging process of capturing their own creative evolution in a professional quality video—all in addition to their demanding studio and academic course load. Light guidance was provided throughout the creative process by a small team of staff from Admissions and Marketing and Communications. The result is a series of video self-portraits that truly capture the student’s intimate voice, motivations and distinctive viewpoints.

Phillip Burrows – Phillip set himself apart from his household full of athletes when he started drawing as a kid. He then followed his artistic inclinations into Miami’s prestigious Design and Architecture Senior High (DASH) and then into ArtCenter’s Entertainment Design program, where he’s inventing whole new realities.

Miguel Harry – While studying engineering in his hometown of Medellin, Colombia, Miguel learned about the work of ArtCenter alumni such as Yves Béhar. It was all he needed to pack his bags and join the Product Design department in Pasadena. He hasn’t looked back.

Yeun Kim – A deep love of literature while growing up in South Korea informed Yeun’s choice to apply to ArtCenter as a Graphic Design major. She stretched her skills in human experience design during a Study Away trip while collaborating on a pop-up installation with design students in Havana, Cuba, which lead to an exploration into spatial design through sound poetry.

David Sanchez – Originally from Moreno Valley, in the Inland Empire of Southern California, David transformed his early passion for cartoons into rich storytelling skills at ArtCenter’s top-ranked Entertainment Design program’s Character Animation track.

Cristina Wilson – A San Gabriel Valley native, Cristina channels her quirky sense of humor, idiosyncratic approach to creativity and passionate positivity into the compelling voice she’s developing as an ArtCenter Illustration student.

The series will continue with new episodes debuting in early 2018 as ArtCenter identifies a fresh batch of students with a diverse array of experience representing additional college majors.

Video production at ArtCenter College of Design is made possible by Bruce Heavin (BFA 93) and Lynda Weinman through the establishment of the Bruce Heavin Media Production Studio to support online learning and increase awareness of the College.

MCCA’s LMJ Scholarship Now Accepting Applications

mcca-logo

Since 2004, the national program annually grants scholarships of $10,000 to first-year law school students

Washington, DC – The Lloyd M. Johnson, Jr. Scholarship program (LMJ Scholarship) is now accepting applications for the 2017-18 academic school year.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, law is one of the least diverse professions in the nation.

The National Association for Law Placement (NALP) released their 2016 Report on Diversity in U.S. Law Firms this January, revealing only small victories for minorities in law. The representation of minorities among lawyers increased to 14.62% in 2016, compared to 13.97% in 2015. However, when you look at the eight-year span from 2009-2016, the number of minority lawyers has only increased by 2.03%.

Established by the Minority Corporate Counsel Association, the LMJ Scholarship program seeks to nurture the academic and professional careers of outstanding law students and advance the diversity pipeline to the legal profession.

Each year, the LMJ Scholarship program awards up to 10 scholarships of $10,000 to incoming first-year law students.

To be eligible for the LMJ Scholarship program, students must be accepted into an ABA-accredited U.S. law school for a full-time Juris Doctorate Program, have earned an undergraduate cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher, and have an interest in corporate law and diversity.

Applicants will be evaluated based on financial need, community involvement, essay content and academic achievements. The scholarships may be applied to tuition, fees, books, supplies and equipment required for courses at ABA-accredited U.S. law schools. The deadline to apply is June 15, 2017.

For more information about the LMJ Scholarship and the application process visit http://www.mcca.com/resources/scholarship-program/.
