University of Washington Chooses xpedx To Help Cut Costs, Clean Smarter and Meet Environmental Goals

After winning the contract, the first project xpedx tackled was getting the university custodial purchasing functions consolidated — and online.

The university and xpedx worked closely together to build a customized electronic ordering method that standardized ordering across 11 campus service areas.  It also unified jan-san supplies procurement across the university — and eliminated the manual approval process.

The new online site is customized for the UW.  It features all UW-approved cleaning products, purchase authorization codes and budgeting detail.  Because this is the custodial department’s first online ordering system, it also was designed to meet varying computer skill sets.

SPME Urges TIAA-CREF Members to Call For Resistance to Pressure to Divest From Israel Investments

HARRISBURG, Pa., Sept. 14 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — The Board of Directors of Scholars for Peace in the Middle East (SPME) deplores the recently publicized demand that TIAA-CREF divest itself of its holdings in an Israeli-owned company, Africa-Israel. SPME is an international academic organization of 28,000 academics world-wide, based in the United States.

The divestment demand came from 59 academics, several of whom are well known for anti-Israel activism. The anti-Israel faculty had their facts wrong (TIAA-CREF had already terminated its holding, presumably for financial reasons), but their demand illustrates certain academics’ hostility, bias and prejudice towards the state of Israel, and their indifference to the facts.

The SPME Board of Directors commends TIAA-CREF for its long-standing and consistent policy of resisting the politicization of its allocations, and urges that any future calls to divest from Israeli companies for political reasons be rejected.

Furthermore, because of recent confusion in the media, we encourage TIAA-CREF to make a public statement about its purely fiduciary decision to drop Africa-Israel from its holdings, and about its commitment to resisting the politicization of its allocations.

Reducing waste, energy and sourcing food locally help campuses win kudos

GAITHERSBURG, Md., September 14, 2009 — Several campuses served by Sodexo earned a coveted spot on the Princeton Review’s Green Honor Roll and Sierra Club’s Cool Schools list for contributing to campus sustainability initiatives from methods of sourcing and serving food to reducing heat-trapping pollutants.

Sodexo, through its contracted foodservice and facilities management, contributed to the following campuses earning green distinction, including Binghamton University, Colorado College, Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech), Warren Wilson College and the University of Vermont.

Binghamton University in Binghamton, N.Y. in collaboration with Sodexo, has reduced the amount of disposable items in dining halls to produce almost zero waste. Sodexo utilizes as much organic and local produce and dairy products as are seasonably available. Approximately 2,500 pounds of food waste is collected each day for composting from Binghamton dining and retail facilities, approximately 27,000 pounds per semester or about 27 tons per academic year.

Colorado College in Colorado Springs, through Sodexo-contracted facilities management, was able to reduce the number of cleaning products by half and switch to microfiber cloths and mops, reducing custodial-cleaning water use by about 247,000 gallons per year in residential and academic areas. Sodexo uses environmentally preferable chemical-dispensing systems that are nontoxic and reduce waste. Tent cards in dorm rooms tell students rooms are cleaned using eco-friendly products that are Green Seal™ certified. Colorado College was one of only two colleges honored by American School & University magazine, the Green Cleaning Network, and the Healthy Schools Campaign for the 2008 Green Cleaning Award for Schools and Universities.

Georgia Tech in Atlanta has benefited from Sodexo’s comprehensive reusable mug program, which has significantly reduced waste and eased the way for a full-scale composting program. This year, the dining facility became a zero-waste organization by having dining waste composted and used for campus grounds maintenance.
