US College Students Have Wildly Different Approaches to Eating Healthy and Maintaining Mental Focus than the Rest of the World

New global research conducted on behalf of global student housing operator Yugo, uncovers students’ outlooks on a variety of mental and physical health related topics, including:

• More than 25% of US students believe more calories, salt and saturated fats make for a healthier meal
• Female students are more likely to go to bed early and eat junk food to prep for finals

Denver, May 23, 2022 – Recent research has revealed a clear imbalance between college students’ perceptions of a healthy lifestyle versus the reality – particularly when it comes to preparing for finals.

The research was conducted on behalf of Yugo, the first global student housing operator created to enhance students’ experiences throughout and beyond university life. The research included a variety of health-related topics and gathered the opinions of more than 6,000 students across six countries.

Key findings of the survey include:

• US students are the worst at cooking at home - The study found less than 25% of US students cook seven or more healthy meals a week, compared to 29% in the rest of the world. Time (63%), money (57%) and the convenience of takeaways (31%) were cited as some of the biggest barriers to cooking. Female college students (33%) are more likely to eat a healthy breakfast than male college students, although on average women college students are (33%) less likely to cook while at school.

US students are more likely to grab a healthy snack such as a piece of fruit (47.2%) than fast food (30.6%) when they are stressed and short of time. Women students (31%) are more than twice as likely than men (14%) to grab a Snickers bar or a bag of Doritos.

• Confusion about what makes a healthy meal – A large percentage of US students compared to the rest of the world believe that higher the number of calories (33%), salt (26%), and saturated fats (25%), the healthier the meal. Students with the least confusion were in Australia (29%) and Spain (25%).

• Opinions on how to keep the brain sharp for finals varies significantly – S. students agree exercise (50%), more sleep (42%) and less fast food (31%) are key factors in mental preparation. Women are more likely to go to bed early than men (39%) while men are more likely than women to play computer games to aid in enhancing their mental focus for exams (45%). Surprisingly, 9.5% of US students will drink more alcohol to calm their nerves. Additionally, 23% of respondents believe that sex will help with studying and focusing their mind, but 10% take the total opposite view and will abstain from sex during finals.

Yugo is focused on improving the quality of life for students through its Live Your Best Life program, ensuring students are supported throughout their university experience, to the transition to working life and beyond. Through this initiative, students have access to a number of support networks and group sessions to improve their holistic living.

Abby Bentley, Global Brand and Marketing Director said: “At Yugo, our core pillars were developed by students, for students. Supporting the holistic needs of our students is our top priority and we are constantly striving to improve the ways in which we operate. This research helps us to understand those specific areas, be it through extra-curricular educational courses, training sessions, or even peer support groups. Our unique pillars of YugoEco, YuPro and YuGrow are constantly evolving to meet the changing needs of today’s students, ensuring we are always there to support them.”

Yugo’s unique approach

At Yugo, students are empowered to grow personally through collaborative events and projects under the Live Your Best Life program – a holistic living experience developed from the Yugo research of thousands of students worldwide. This program supports students through three pillars based on sustainability – YugoEco, education – YuPro, personal development – YuGrow, to deliver on their needs and expectations.

• YugoEco sees Yugo coming together with students to create better living spaces and a better planet through several initiatives. These include low energy usage programs, a collaboration with the Carbon Literacy Project on the importance of living more sustainable lives for students, and global partnerships with like-minded businesses for events, education and student experiences.

• YuPro is all about empowering young people beyond higher education and helping to prepare them for their careers. To show commitment to YuPro, Yugo is launching its own student council, ‘The Yugo Movement’, where students will be given one mission – to eliminate single use plastic in our spaces. Yugo is also offering training sessions in areas such as career advice, real life experience, coaching and empowerment.

• YuGrow encourages Yugo students to shine by supporting their personal journey through events and activities in Yugo spaces, including student podcasts, diversity events and global student networking opportunities. Yugo also pledges to provide students with the best and most sustainably sourced chairs and beds – these were key findings from Yugo’s ongoing research, as being critical to their lives to support both their physical environment and their emotional needs.

Neighbor.com Survey Finds Nearly 70% of Recent Graduates Turn to Gig Work to Cover Their Bills

LEHI, Utah, May 12, 2022 — Neighbor.com, the peer-to-peer self storage marketplace, surveyed 1,000 college students and recent graduates about the current job landscape, as well as their saving and spending behaviors, in the Students and Grads Money Report. The survey found that most students and graduates are optimistic about their future opportunities, but are still having a hard time finding good jobs with wages high enough to cover all their bills.

The study uncovered that 46% of recent grads spend 75% of their paycheck on bills. That means recent grads need a side hustle to help supplement their entry-level salary. Nearly 70% of respondents are doing some type of gig work to earn more money outside of their 9-5 jobs, while 1 in 3 relies on gig work as the main source of income.

“People are struggling to pay their bills and are always looking for ways to make more. Most of them are turning to gig-type jobs to supplement their 9-to-5 income. This illustrates one of the core reasons we started Neighbor—to help people make a passive income,” said Joseph Woodbury, co-founder and CEO of Neighbor. “There are an estimated 33.6 million spare bedrooms throughout the U.S., meaning a lot of people can take advantage of the storage gig and turn their unused space into cash.”

Additional findings from the report:

• No Savings—Nearly 50% of college students either don’t have a savings account or have one but have no money in it.
• Tracking Finances—30% of college students use a budgeting app to manage where their money goes.
• No Credit Cards—59% of college students either don’t have a credit card at all or have one that they use only for emergencies.
• Parental Support—73% of college students say they’ve received financial help from their parents.
• Discretionary Spending— More than 50% of extra cash is spent on clothing and accessories.

As STDs Surge, Quest Diagnostics Debunks Common Myths; Highlights Importance of STD Testing

New CDC data shows that people avoided STD testing during the pandemic –

People aged 15-24 years make up half of all STD cases

If you think the quarantines that kept people from dating and sex mean you’re less likely to catch an STD, think again. The pandemic may have caused a dip in sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in the US very early on, but new data reveals that the decline was short lived. A new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found that cases of STDs decreased during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic but increased by the end of 2020. And people between the ages of 15-24 made up more than half (53%) of all reported cases of STDs.

Rates of syphilis and gonorrhea, two common STDs, climbed. And while the report showed declines in chlamydia, another common STD, experts are quick to point out that it is likely due to a decrease in screening, rather than a drop in actual cases.

Quest Diagnostics, the world’s leading provider of diagnostic information services, is breaking down common myths about STDs and sharing simple steps to take to protect your sexual health. Just remember S.T.D.:

• Start by getting back to care
• Test to know if you have an STD
• Do get treatment to protect your health and others

“Too many young people are at a high risk of STDs, but they may not know it or understand how important it is to be tested and treated, even when they lack symptoms. Reluctance to discuss risk with a healthcare provider is a common barrier, but the pandemic has added another layer of complication,” said Damian “Pat” Alagia, III, MD, an OB/GYN and medical director of women’s health for Quest Diagnostics. “The good news is that there are services available for individuals, including college students, that provide direct access to STD testing without the need to visit a doctor’s office first, so they can get the screening and treatment they need if they put off care during the pandemic, have personal privacy concerns, or are uncomfortable discussing their sexual history with a healthcare provider face to face.”

Myth #1: No symptoms means no STD.

STDs are often silent and without symptoms. In fact, up to 50% of men and 90% of women with chlamydia don’t show symptoms, and about 80% of women with gonorrhea have no symptoms.[1][2][3] The only way to know for sure if you have an STD is to get tested.

Myth #2: I would know if my partner had an STD.

This goes along with myth #1. You usually can’t see that someone has an STD – even a doctor can’t tell by looking at people. And it’s possible your partner may have an STD and not know it. Reminder: people don’t always have symptoms.

Myth #3: STDs don’t have serious health effects.

While college students may be more focused on pregnancy prevention than starting families, understanding the potential for long term health effects is important. If left unchecked, STDs like chlamydia and gonorrhea – which are curable with treatment – can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease in women and cause infertility in all people.

Myth #4: If my doctor thought I had an STD, he or she would have tested me for it.

Not necessarily. Some younger people are uncomfortable or embarrassed to have a frank conversation about their sexual behavior with their doctors, are not honest about their sexual history, and may not understand their STD risk. On the flip side, past research by Quest Diagnostics found gaps in care among doctors, with annual screening guidelines sometimes overlooked, especially if someone doesn’t have symptoms.

Myth #5: My partner and I are exclusive, so I don’t need to be tested.

In fact, if you and your partner have each had sex before, you are both at risk unless you both got tested before you became intimate. According to the CDC, all sexually active women under the age of 25 should be screened once a year for chlamydia and gonorrhea, regardless of the number of sex partners, and all sexually active men who have sex with men should be tested at least once a year for syphilis, chlamydia, and gonorrhea.

Myth #6: Getting tested is a hassle—and embarrassing.

Screening for STDs does not have to be daunting or embarrassing. Consumer-initiated testing services like QuestDirect from Quest Diagnostics allow people to purchase a test discreetly online, including tests for some of the most common STDs like chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis. You can choose to share results with your doctor or talk with an independent physician about your results to come up with a plan that supports your health, including prescription treatment if appropriate. Other options include making an appointment with a primary care doctor or, for females, an OB/GYN, and many colleges have health clinics that may offer STD testing. The CDC also offers resources to find a testing site near you at GetTested.cdc.gov.

The thought of having an STD can be scary, but most are curable and catching them early is the best way to protect yourself and others. Knowledge is power. Just remember these simple steps: S.T.D.

Start by getting back to care. A majority of people put off preventive care during the pandemic.
Test to know if you have an STD. Remember, if sexually active, the only true way to know whether you have an STD is to get tested.
Do get treatment to protect your health and others. Even without symptoms, you can carry and spread an STD, and seeking testing and treatment is not something you need to be intimidated about.

Students Demanded Short-Term International Trips, WorldStrides Delivered

New quick itineraries to destinations such as Spain, Morocco, England and Thailand are designed to provide students international experience and maximize time on campus after two years in a pandemic

WASHINGTON, D.C. – April 12, 2022WorldStrides, the leader in educational travel experiences, has created a brand new set of condensed itineraries for students to experience Europe, Asia and other popular destinations. Break Escapes trips are 7-10 day adventures led by local tour guides and are reinventing the overseas study abroad experience, providing insider access to the worlds’ top destinations.

“We designed BreakEscapes to occur during winter, summer, and spring breaks to cater to students who want an international experience and still want to have time for a full semester on campus or an internship during their scheduled breaks from school,” said Brian DeMoss, head of higher education marketing at WorldStrides. WorldStrides listened to feedback from their student travelers who have missed out on so much the last two years, both studying abroad and through on-campus living, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Destinations for Break Escapes include: Spain (Madrid & Barcelona), England (London), Costa Rica (San Jose & Tortuga Island), Fiji (Naviti & Beachcomber), Australia (Sydney & Cairns), Morocco (Fez & Merzouga), France (Paris), and Thailand (Chiang Mai & Krabi).

Break Escapes is different from other study abroad experiences – each trip is led by a local guide, familiar with each destination inside and out. Students will also stay in three- or four-star hotels rather than a hostel. Students can refer their friends, classmates and peers on campus for a reduced rate, and can even request the same roommate(s) for the duration of their trip. The fee for each seven-day, six-night adventure varies by location, but each includes premium hotel accommodations each night, most meals, exclusive cultural excursions led by local guides, and so much more. Students are responsible for their own roundtrip airfare. The deadline to apply is Sunday, May 1, 2022.

Students can learn more about BreakEscapes and begin planning their adventure here.

RAD Announces ‘RAD Light My Way’ an Integrated Campus Safety Application

Detroit, Michigan, March 31, 2022 — Artificial Intelligence Technology Solutions, Inc., (OTCPK:AITX), today announced that its wholly owned subsidiary Robotic Assistance Devices, Inc. (RAD) has formally released RAD Light My Way™, the first of its kind facility and campus safety solution where users can control the lighting and security conditions of their environment.

“With RAD Light My Way, consumers whether they’re employees in a corporate office building, or students on a college campus can take control of their immediate safety surroundings while outdoors, especially at night,” said Steve Reinharz, CEO of AITX. “For years RAD has been producing remarkable security solutions based on our advanced artificial intelligence technologies, and corporate clients have benefited from the enhanced security and low cost they deliver.”

RAD Light My Way offers property management and campus security professionals a new and better way to address security. This breakthrough solution puts the power of security in the hands of employees, faculty, and students through the combination of affordable, smart, interactive technologies, a mobile app, and live remote monitoring and response services.

The facility management industry has taken notice. RAD Light My Way is the winner of the 2021 Best Workplace Experience Award, part of CBRE’s annual Supplier Innovation Challenge.

“We’re seeing that students and faculty members on college campuses want to be more empowered over how their security and safety is implemented,” said Michael Martin, CEO at Circadian Risk, a company which provides tools for risk analysis to optimize for risk solutions and help with OSHA, ISO, and unlimited compliance, threat, and hazard scenarios. “RAD Light My Way will certainly give end-users the peace of mind that’s often absent from outdated security systems,” Martin concluded.

The foundation of RAD Light My Way is RAD’s suite of artificial intelligence-driven security robotic devices. Each features a combination of high-resolution cameras, human and vehicle detection, license plate recognition, responsive digital signage and audio messaging, lights, sirens, and two-way communication with remote monitoring security personnel. Units are available in several form-factors: tower, wall-mounted panel, overhead device, and rugged, autonomous 4-wheeled mobile robot. These devices have already proven effective at performing many of the same tasks as onsite human guards. They deter the occurrence of crime, identify security threats, provide autonomous and human-assisted remote response, and provide “eyewitness” documentation of events via high-resolution, recorded video. Remotely monitoring personnel receive alerts whenever a device senses the motion of a human or vehicle.

“RAD Light My Way is a fantastic integration of technology that solves many parking lot security issues,” commented Jeffrey A. Slotnick, CPP, PSP, President of Setracon Enterprise Security Risk Management Services. “Almost every one of my clients has parking facilities. In the Pacific Northwest, we have short days and long nights in the winter, and often it is dark by 3:30 pm. I have spoken with many employees at various organizations. A primary concern is going from their workspace’s protected environment and out to the unprotected parking lot. It’s a cost-effective solution to a well-known problem and one I am recommending to any of my clients with parking lots.”

Robotic Assistance Devices (RAD) is a high-tech start-up that delivers robotics and artificial intelligence-based solutions that empower organizations to gain new insight, solve complex security challenges, and fuel new business ideas at reduced costs. RAD developed its advanced security robot technology from the ground up including circuit board design, and base code development. This allows RAD to have complete control over all design elements, performance, quality, and the user’s experience of all security robots whether SCOT™, ROSA™, Wally™, Wally HSO™, AVA™, ROAMEO™, or RAD Light My Way™. Fashionably executed: a collaboration with Hardware LDN and Biohaven Pharmaceuticals at New York Fashion Week

London fashion designer Jessica Horwell debuted her grungy, eclectic Fall/Winter 2022 collection at New York Fashion Week on Feb. 12. Pieces included form-fitting dresses, flattering knits with shape-enhancing accents from balloon sleeves to fur cuffs, and a leather bomber jacket embroidered with the words “Fearless, “Grateful,” and “Relief” across the front to raise awareness for a disease that affects women three times more than men – migraine.

Biohaven Pharmaceuticals partnered with Hardware LDN to help empower women with migraine to advocate for themselves and demand more from their treatment.

“We’re about women empowerment. We’re about changing women’s daily lives, and that’s really where I see the connection,” Horwell said. “Not every woman cares about what they wear. But I do feel that when women feel confident in what they are wearing and when they feel healthy, they want to be out. They want to be seen and living their best lives.”

The Hardware LDN style is for tomboys to the girly girls to the latest up-and-coming rappers and creatives. Defined by leather, dress silhouettes and metal trims and embellishments, the brand is a mix of grungy and glamorous.

“Hardware LDN is about authenticity,” Horwell said. “When you buy Hardware, it’s because you want to be bold. You want to make a statement. You want to emphasize to people that you are part of that lifestyle.”

Established in 2014 by Horwell, Hardware LDN began with jewelry creations made with hardware she found in her friend’s garage. Horwell made custom pieces for her close circle of friends and creatives, including Cara Delevigne and Rita Ora, until eventually the brand grew into a high fashion line.

“It’s really important for me to make high quality garments, timeless pieces – jackets you’re going to look at five to ten years down the line and love them just as much as the day you bought them,” Horwell said. “I think there is so much fast fashion and badly made garments, and I want to make something different where people can see the love, quality and care that’s gone into making them.”

Two models living with migraine who use Biohaven Pharmaceuticals’ migraine treatment, Nurtec® ODT (rimegepant), walked the runway to further amplify the message of confidence and female empowerment.

Nurtec ODT is a prescription medicine used in adults for the acute treatment of migraine attacks with or without aura and the preventive treatment of episodic migraine. Nurtec ODT is contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to rimegepant, Nurtec ODT, or to any of its components. Nurtec ODT may cause serious side effects including allergic reactions, including trouble breathing and rash. This can happen days after you take Nurtec ODT. Call your HCP or get emergency help right away if you have swelling of the face, mouth, tongue, or throat or trouble breathing. This occurred in less than 1% of patients treated with Nurtec ODT.

“My heart is racing. It’s so inspiring. I love being around other creative people,” said Amy Marietta, blogger and Nurtec ODT influencer, minutes after the show ended.

“I’m so happy to spread awareness about [migraine] because so many people are affected. This is the perfect partnership.”

Several other Nurtec ODT influencers and real-life migraine patients attended the show, including college student Ellie Wiese.

As a junior in high school, Wiese did not think she would be able to go to college because her migraine was so debilitating. When she turned 18, she enrolled in the Nurtec ODT trial.  Almost four years later, she is in her fourth year of a dual-degree program at Wagner College in Staten Island where she is studying to be a physician’s assistant.

“It’s a very intense, expedited program where you are just studying constantly. I absolutely know I would never have made it through this last year,” Wiese said, crediting Nurtec ODT for relieving her migraine pain and enable her to achieve her academic success. “I’m very grateful for everything everyone at Biohaven has done.”

She enjoyed her time at the show, noting how meaningful it was to interact with other women who also struggle with migraine.

“To see what the drug has done to change the lives of these women is really impactful because I know how much it’s changed my life,” Wiese said.

“Everyone thinks it’s just a headache, and it’s not. It’s not just a headache. To be able to be with a group of people that understand what you’re going through – because a lot of people don’t understand what you’re going through – to be heard and to share experiences and know you’re not alone is a very moving thing.”

Wiese noted that the words on the Nurtec ODT jacket were particularly meaningful, given the battles migraine patients fight all the time.

Horwell shared specific advice for college students or men and women in their early-20s.

“Don’t be afraid to be different. In fact, being different is one of the best things you can ever be. Thinking outside the box and thinking uniquely and creatively is a gift, and if you see that you have it, you need to follow it,” Horwell said.

Next up, Horwell is planning Hardware LDN pop ups in New York in June. She is also working on plans to expand her jewelry, accessories, and menswear. Her goal is to build upon the success of her New York show and continue to expand the brand.

And you might be wondering beyond the styles presented at the Hardware LDN show… what color is in for 2022? Conveniently, it’s Very Peri – a soft purple and a familiar hue to the color of the Nurtec ODT brand.
