The Power of Peer Support: Sheryl Sandberg’s “Lean In” Hits Campuses

“I’m too young, too inexperienced,” Stephanie Mecham thought. “There’s no way I’d get the job.”

The 19-year-old had seen a posting for an internship that was exactly what she wanted to do—a legislative correspondent role in government. It was a perfect match for her skills, and her goals. And yet for some reason she convinced herself not to apply. (“Why waste the time only to get rejected?” she thought.)

The next week, Mecham sat down with members of her Lean In Circle, a group of students she meets with regularly to talk about school and life. The subject this week was stepping outside their comfort zones. One by one, the women shared stories of overcoming their fears and owning their abilities.

Mecham went home that night and applied for the job. She got it.

Women everywhere face unique challenges because of biases we all hold—biases that tell us women should be nurturers, not leaders, modest, not confident. LeanIn.Org, the women’s nonprofit founded by Sheryl Sandberg, is working to break down those biases. They believe the path forward begins with Lean In Circles.

Lean In Circles—small groups that meet regularly to learn and grow together—are as unique as the people who start them. At the University of Tennessee, a graduate student runs a Circle called “Systers” for female computer science students. A Circle of Asian-American men at Harvard meets to discuss the biases they face because of their race. At the American University of Iraq, a group runs pop-up events for female entrepreneurs. As different as they come, Circles all share one thing in common: the power of peer support.

Today there are more than 20,000 Circles in 73 countries—and on 350 college campuses. Like Stephanie, 75% of members attribute a positive outcome in their life to their Circle, and 83% say they’re more likely to take on a new opportunity or challenge.

“We believe that the world would be better with more women sitting at the tables where decisions are made—and we believe today’s students are the generation that can make this happen,” says Rachel Thomas, the president of LeanIn.Org.

On September 18, Sheryl Sandberg and the LeanIn.Org team will host a Livestream discussion (leanin.org/livestream) for students who are interested in learning more about Lean In Circles. Sheryl will share career advice, and Circle members will share their personal experiences from last year on campus.

Students face unique challenges as they head out into the world: what career path they want to take, who their life partner will be, what type of leader they want to become. LeanIn.Org believes Circles can help provide the support and skills to prepare for a successful transition into the workplace.

“Think of Circles as part peer learning and part peer support group,” says Thomas. “At leanin.org, we offer everything students need to run a successful Circle—including expert videos and discussion guides on how to communicate with confidence, accept feedback, and work effectively on teams,” says Thomas.

“Students everywhere can make a difference,” Thomas continues. “With each student that steps outside her comfort zone, takes the lead or speaks up, we will.”

Tune in for the LeanIn.Org Livestream on Sept18 at 7:30pm ET/ 4:30pm PT. Log on at leanin.org/livestream or start or find a Circle on your campus at leanin.org/circles.

Integrated with Cengage Learning’s MindTap, Flashnotes.com Offers Student-Created Content to Deliver Improved Academic Outcomes for Today’s Students

BOSTON, Mass. September 10, 2014 – Empowering students to play an active role in how academic content is created and consumed, Cengage Learning, a global education company, and Flashnotes.com, the student-to-student study materials marketplace, announced a strategic partnership to integrate the Flashnotes.com marketplace into MindTap, the premier e-learning environment that delivers high levels of engagement to inspire improved student outcomes. Through this integration, students will have access to course-specific, student-to-student study materials – study guides, notes, flashcards, video tutorials and live video help. Cengage Learning will also invest in Flashnotes.com’s Series B round of funding.

MindTap’s immersive learning platform was developed to address how students live and learn, and combines traditional lesson content with interactive assignments, apps and collaboration tools to guide students through learning along a proven path.

“Cengage Learning is deeply focused on understanding the needs of students to deliver innovative tools and services that set them up for success,” said Jim Donohue, Chief Product Officer, Cengage Learning. “That means always looking for new ways to engage students. Our partnership with Flashnotes.com will enable us to enhance the higher ed learning experience in a way that reflects the way students work and study, with content generated by the students themselves. It is the sharing economy at work in education.”

This partnership recognizes the need for high quality, student-created content to augment existing study materials in today’s marketplace, and to enable students to study and learn in the way that works best for them.

“Our partnership with Cengage Learning recognizes the importance of student-created content in helping today’s college students excel academically,” said Michael Matousek, Founder of Flashnotes.com. “Cengage Learning is leading a transformative change in education that will benefit students in a profound way, and we’re excited they’ve chosen the Flashnotes.com platform to provide them with highly relevant, student-created content.”

Within the Flashnotes.com marketplace, students can create relevant study materials or offer services that will help other students. They have the ability to set the price for these materials or services and earn a commission of each sale, paid to them on a weekly basis. Flashnotes.com works with institutions and faculty members to ensure that the materials created by students fit into school guidelines. All Flashnotes.com study materials are originally created by students and are subject to rigid processes to ensure that the rights of copyright owners are fully respected.

Commenting on this partnership, Lester Lefton, President Emeritus of Kent State University and Flashnotes.com Board Member, said, “Cengage Learning and Flashnotes.com are working together within the higher ed ecosystem to foster meaningful change. Instead of trying to bring disruptive change to a world that is rooted in tradition, this inclusive approach benefits all stakeholders – the faculty, administrators, students and publishers.”

Nutini has toured worldwide appearing at some of the world’s biggest festivals. He has also performed alongside legends such as The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Etta James and Solomon Burke.

“You can hear a lot of history in Paolo Nutini’s voice. The scratch in his timbre and the wind in his lungs recall the most virile soul singers in U.K. history, from Joe Cocker to Paul Rodgers to Rod Stewart.” – NY Daily News
“This is a seriously clever album by an artist who has clearly matured and deserves to have a big hit on his hands. I’d bet the mortgage on this being one of 2014’s defining albums.” – Sunday Mirror
“The 27-year-old and his whisky-soaked words writhe their way around a multitude of Motown-inflected could-be singles, paying homage to Prince, Marvin Gaye, Echo & The Bunnymen, the Beach Boys, and D’Angelo along the way.” –The Guardian

“What’s he been doing (for the past five years)?” wondered The Sunday Times before answering, “Writing the best songs of his career.”

The Independent summed it up, declaring “CAUSTIC LOVE” to be “an unqualified success…the best UK R&B album since the 1970s blue-eyed-soul heyday of Rod Stewart and Joe Cocker.”

Sierra Club Calls on University and College Students
to Join the People’s Climate March

Students Nationwide Joining Largest Environmental March in Global History

SAN FRANCISCO, CA –The Sierra Student Coalition, the youth arm of the Sierra Club, announced today that they are calling on students to join in the People’s Climate March in New York City, Sunday, September 21. The march will be staged in advance of the UN Climate Summit to be held on Wednesday, September 23 and is expected to be the largest climate march in history.

Leaders from around the world will be attending the summit with the expectation that this will lead to more serious attention to address global climate change. They’ll be met by students, members and volunteers from the Sierra Club who will join a coalition of close to 800 environmental, labor, and civil rights organizations that will march in New York to demand these leaders do more to halt climate disruption.

“This next generation is often characterized as the last one that can make a difference in climate change, and the march is an opportunity to tip the climate movement in favor of making that a reality,” stated Michael Brune, executive director of the Sierra Club. “We’re asking students to march with us to show that this is an issue that affects all of us now and the only way to ensure it’s not a future problem is to start solving it now.”

Students who join in the march will have an opportunity to meet and work with other students at the Youth Convergence set up from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, September 20th at Martin Luther King Education Campus, 122 Amsterdam Avenue between West 65th and 66th Streets. Different organizations, including the Sierra Club, 350.org, the NEC, and the Green Schools Alliance, will be conducting workshops and seminars on different environmental and social justice-related topics.

Youth Convergence organizers say the purpose is to create a space for young people from across the climate justice movement to come together to learn from others in the movement and prepare for the People’s Climate March the following day.

Buses are being organized to bring participants to New York from various points outside of the city. More information about the buses and how students can get involved with the Youth Convergence and the People’s Climate March can be found here http://ssc.org/PCM

College Students Are Signing Up With An Innovative New Social Network

ThePortalz.com is a unique social network that gives individuals capability to create their own private social networks and create user accounts for others.

Fairfield County, CT September 3, 2014 — An innovative social network called The Portalz sets itself apart from other social networks through a major change in methodology and gives focus to responsibility, privacy, safety, and collaboration.

Unlike other sites, individuals can not directly sign up for a user account. Rather, all user accounts for The Portalz can be real names or nicknames and are created by an Administrator. An individual signs up for an Administrative account and is then given the capability to not only create a user account for themselves, but also create/manage additional user accounts on behalf of others. All members of the social network receive their user accounts by either creating one for themselves as an Administrator or by having someone else who is already an Administrator create one for them. This process is an important distinction to understand and allows for other unique social networking features to occur.

The Portalz also has 3 age based communities for socializing. Each user account is assigned to one of these communities (tween, teen, or adult) at the time they are created.

Another significant feature involves the creation of Private Social Networks. All user accounts that are created by the same individual (Administrator) are automatically grouped together to form its own private social network. Interaction between users within a private social network is separate and distinct from interaction between users within an age based community.

Julianna Yee, the teenage co-founder says “The Portalz has familiar features similar to most social networks but is very different because this social network is about control. Socializing within a community of peers makes great sense and having the additional choice to communicate separately within your own private social network is outstanding. Our unique process makes this possible”.

Another channel of communication called a “Linked Private Social Network” can also be created by joining 2 or more different private social networks together as a single unit. Members of a Linked Private Social Network have access to exclusive social interaction that is above and beyond communications within an assigned community or independent private social network.

Bill Yee, the company’s other co-founder further mentions, “Parents, business leads, and individuals are building their private social networks by signing up as Administrators and creating user accounts for themselves and others. Family private social networks are influential in keeping everyone in closer contact and business private social networks becomes a company’s own intranet site providing enhanced privacy for better task collaboration.”

Bill continues by saying “College students and young adults are currently the ones taking charge in creating private social networks. They are signing up for multiple Administrative Accounts with each having different sets of created user accounts, one set for their family members to use and the other for friends who share common interests and activities. It is acceptable to have multiple Administrative Accounts and more than one user account so long as site rules are followed and responsibility is exercised.”

Julianna Yee adds. “We have received support from a member of the House of Representatives, Jim Himes, who advocates for stronger and better privacy on social networks. If anyone currently has an account with another social network like Facebook or LinkedIn, then they should sign-up with us as well because you give up nothing and have much to gain. It doesn’t have to be a one-or-another kind of decision. All information has importance, and being able to determine how and with whom you can interact gives it value.”

“ThePortalz.com is a great choice in social networks especially if you find having control over your information is important. You can easily take it for a test drive and verify for yourselves. It’s free and only takes a couple of minutes to sign up.”

About The Portalz:
ThePortalz.com is a social network that was formally launched in summer 2014. It was created as a way to offer the best in privacy, collaboration, and safety. Julianna Yee, the network’s teenage co-founder, conceived the vision and methodology for The Portalz while still a tween and after years of development would break ground with collaboration from fellow co-founder Bill Yee.

Jazz Assistant – Create Inspiring Music You can Use and Play

What is Jazz Assistant?
Jazz Assistant is a computer software program which generates computer music . It uses specific design criteria (an algorithm) to create a printout (a musical composition). The printout can be played by humans for any musical instrument. It is designed for jazz and the blues

Benefits of Jazz Assistant
No writers block: The algorithm will produce music which will stimulate you so you can create your own jazz and blues compositions. The music created will be printed so you can use it directly or use it to inspire new jazz and blues compositions. Each selection is non-redundant, meaning that with just a small selection of the music, you will have a variety of ways you can use the musical creations. Best of all, you can use it right away. The music comes in printed score-sheets that you can study and can also play.
Share the credit, not all the royalty: Once you download the composition, it’s yours to do with as you like. My fees come through the subscription service or by your initial payment of each page. There is no requirement that share all royalties for creations you create. All that we ask is that you credit DOUGLAS CORNISH & ANDREI BELUTA as a joint composer.

Listen to a sample
Each day, you can listen to a different free sample to get a free feel for what www.jazzassistant.com can do for you. The compositions are create a wonderful random generation or notes and chord segments. The music is ablaze with bold brash blues progressions and jazz syncopation of musicality. It’s “cool” to listen to.

Why Jazz Assistant is unique
• Capability: The algorithm has the capabilities of creating more than 1 octodocillion pages, all original and different. By changing the decision criteria, according to a randomness factor, different capabilities can be created.
• Uniqueness: The uniqueness of the algorithm is the numerological design of the relative chords and scales and the ways the musical scales are combined. The algorithm first combines the music in an Ionian scale, then a Mixolydian scale and then resolves to a Dorian scale but diminished, or augmented, major and/or minor. The computer program uses a 2,5,1 format – a standard musical progression of chords and scales in the key of C,D,G, then back to C adjusted for all the keys in different modalities. The program is written in Java.

Background of the Creators
Douglas “Corny Cornball” Cornish has been composing and playing blues and jazz for many years. He has been working in the econometric industry for seven years. Douglas Cornish and Andrei Beleuta, a software engineer, created the program which generates the music on April 9, 2013..

At the risk of sounding sophomoric, I will publish an article without the eeditor, as follows. Quoting one composer.

Quoting one composer from Greenwich Village’s café Wha.

The fanciful algorithmic progressions producing music of sound condition satisfactorily and excellently relative to each other with accepted formulations of non-redundant musical notation by Corny Cornball….will stimulate (previously to hearing it)
respective dormant divisions of neurological neuron bundles that by most standards have the complexities of learning imputed knowing form and format of jazz improvisation>

I.E. No writers block.

The free hand the reader and the listener of the site www.jazzassistant.com in composing what the author wants the audience to feel is an opulent
combination and permutation of of randomly generated notes and chord segments.

The personality of the music is ablaze with subtle and downright bold brash blues progressions and jazz syncopation of musicality.

3
There is new and improved intellectual honesty when saying the jazz is abstract; however, writing down one’s zest for life consummate in the piano composer….it goes to publication. Edit and copyright , it is yours…..Just mention and write the sites owners name as a joint composer.

Campus 101: How to Avoid the “Freshman 15”

By Sylvia Meléndez-Klinger, RD

Anyone who’s visited a college dining hall knows the “Freshman 15” isn’t just an urban myth. Between the pasta bar, stir-fry station and dessert table, it’s easy to overindulge – over and over again. But being away from home and adjusting to college life doesn’t have to derail your diet. Developing a simple routine can help you stay fit and focused for the year.

Here are a few tried and true tips from fellow college students (and their parents) that can help you avoid putting on the extra pounds this school year. Following this guidance, as well as eating a balanced diet and staying active, can be a piece of cake (pun intended)!

1. Power Up Your Day

Don’t skip breakfast. If you are rushing to class, grab a piece of fruit, yogurt and granola or a handful of nuts. Or get up a little early (hint: don’t hit snooze) to grab a bite to eat at the dining hall. Put your breakfast on a small plate versus a tray to avoid taking more food than needed to get you going for the day.

2. Take the Long Way

Spending some time exercising will help you burn off those calories you consume from food. Squeeze in some exercise by taking the long route to and from class, or walking instead of taking the bus. Or, turn your backpack into a barbell by throwing in some extra books and taking the stairs. You’ll burn calories and tone those muscles in no time.

3. Give Your Mini-Fridge a Makeover

Whether you’re hanging out with roommates or cramming for an exam, eating in your room at odd hours is part of college life. Making the right choices, and in the right sizes, can mean the difference between picking up extra weight or picking up a hot date. To keep your snacking habits in check, stock your fridge and dorm room with your favorite pre-portioned drinks and snacks, such as mini cans of Coca-Cola, fruit cups, mini Babybel cheese, Nutri-Grain cereal bars, small bags of pre-cut fruits and veggies and individually wrapped snack packs.

4. Avoid the Midnight Snacking Mayhem

We all know college life comes with late night snacking. To avoid temptation, bring healthier snacks to keep you going or study in a place without food (read: avoid studying in the dining hall because it’s stock full of yummy temptations). If you have evening classes or plan on a night out, eat dinner beforehand so you’re not starved late into the night when that pizza delivery can become oh-so-appealing.

5. Buddy Up

Eating right and exercising alone can cause a serious case of FOMO (fear of missing out). So ask your roommates and friends to join in on the fun to keep you motivated and looking great in your selfies! Set a time each day to work out together, go for a jog, join an ultimate Frisbee game or start a pick-up basketball game at the gym. Also, keep each other accountable for making the right food choices at the dining hall and late at night.

Meléndez-Klinger is a registered dietitian based in the Chicago area. She is the mother of a college student and a high school senior. She also consults for companies including The Coca-Cola Company, Kellogg’s, The National Fisheries Institute and others.
